Slip 'n Slide

Today in Italia, many professional bike riders decided to have a little fun and went down sliding across the finish line of the 11th stage at the Giro. These guys are professionals remember, so they didn't bother with the plastic mat that usually comes in the Slip 'n Slide package and played right there on the wet tarmac.

World and Olympic Champion Paolo Bettini is always willing to throw himself on the ground and was once again one of the first to play. Petacchi being always too serious, didn't play and won his third stage of the Giro. Andrea Noè wins the funniest moment of the Giro so far by sliding on his butt, across the finish line with the leader's jersey, which he defended.

You can't always play though. Tomorrow will be much more serious with some scary climbs that should help faze out the names that shouldn't be in the top of the general classification. It's time for Gibo and Cunego to wake up, we'll see if DiLuca is as strong as he seems but for most, it's time to suffer. I expect Paolo Savoldelli to attack the pure climbers on the way down since the stage finishes downhill and he is among the best descenders. He will want to take back time already lost and that he will probably lose on mountain top finishes to come.

1 Danilo Di Luca
2 Gilberto Simoni
3 Andy Schleck - 0:07
4 Eddy Mazzoleni - 0:15
5 Damiano Cunego - 0:19

General classification after stage 12

1 Danilo Di Luca
2 Marzio Bruseghin - 1:03
3 David Arroyo - 1:16
4 Andy Schleck - 1:25
5 Patxi Vila - 1:39
6 Damiano Cunego - 2:10
7 Emanuele Sella - 2:14
8 Gilberto Simoni - 2:34

Di Luca and Simoni are the strongest of this year's Giro and many pre-race favorites like Savoldelli and Popovych are out of the race for the overall so they will probably aim for stage wins from now on. Andy Schleck is surprisingly good while Cunego seems not as strong as expected. I expect Bruseghin, Arroyo and Vila to slowly disappear from the top of the overall as mountain stages go by.

Great racing today and it's only the begining of the real action...
