Giro d'Italia update: rest day 1

What? A rest day already? Well, it's not that the cyclists are tired after only three days of racing, it's just that the race leaves Sardinia and is now moving to the continent, in Italia's boot. Everybody in the ferries. What happened so far? Not much. Petacchi finally won a worthy race on stage 3 after a hard 12 months, McEwen did his thing on stage 2 and perhaps the most surprising is the opening team time trial.

Team Liquigas Cannondale flying to victory on stage 1

Everybody expected CSC (with World TT champion Fabian Cancellara and American TT champ David Zabriskie) or Discovery to take the win but Liquigas Cannondale took the win in convincing fashion and are still wearing the pink leader's jersey heading into the upcoming mountain stage.

Danilo DiLuca and Robbie McEwen during stage 3

The favorites are where we expect them to be at this point. Gilberto Simoni is quite behind with his sub-par time trial skills, the rest of his Saunier Duval team is more constructed to help him in the mountains. Damiano Cunego's Lampre team did much better, reflecting his own improvements in races against the clock. Both aspiring winners fell in yesterday's finale but are okay so they should be more present in tomorrow's stage, the first mountain top finish of the three week race. Now let the real Giro start...
